High dietary intake of tomato juice may lower LDL cholesterol and increase its resistance to oxidation. In a study involving 21 healthy subjects put on a high tomato diet, results indicate that increased dietary intake of tomato products may exert heart protective effects. The high tomato diet was associated with significant reductions in total cholesterol (5.9%) and LDL cholesterol (12.9%), compared with a low tomato diet. The reductions in total and LDL cholesterol were positively correlated with the increases in serum lycopene, beta-carotene, and gamma-carotene concentrations.

In a study involving 5,304 people 55 years old or older, higher intakes of riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) were associated with improved hip bone mineral density higher intake of pyridoxine was associated with a lower risk of fracture. Dietary intake of nutrients was obtained from food frequency questionnaires. Subjects with the highest 25% of pyridoxine intake showed a 23% reduced risk of non-vertebral fractures and a 45% reduced risk of fragility fractures, compared to those in the lower 75% of intake.

Artificial Food Colors and Additives Increase Hyperactivity in Children

In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover trial involving 297 children, eating artificial food colors and food additives was found to increase hyperactive behavior. Children were given a drink containing sodium benzoate and one of 2 artificial food color mixes or a placebo. Results found that compared with placebo, one mix significantly worsened hyperactivity compared with placebo for both the 3-year olds and the 8-year olds. The second mix was only found to have such an effect in the 8-year old children. These results suggest that consumption of foods containing artificial colors or sodium benzoate increases hyperactive behavior in children.

In a placebo controlled study of 96 elderly people over 70 years of age, supplementation with acetyl l-carnitine (ALC) was found to significantly reduce physical and mental fatigue and improve cognitive and physical function. Subjects were given ALC (2000 mg twice a day) or a placebo for 180 days. The ALC group experienced reductions in physical and mental fatigue and had improved functional status and cognitive functions. The results of this study suggest that supplementation with ALC may help to reduce fatigue in the elderly.
