Coffee Associated With 40% Lower Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, Diabetes

I've often written about how medical myths persist, regardless of what the research shows. Well, here we go again…

The old myth being debunked this time? That coffee is bad for you. Yet here comes another study showing that drinking coffee is actually good for you — with the caveat that you keep it to three cups a day or less, as beyond that the benefits begin to decrease.

In a prospective study of over 172,000 people, drinking three cups of coffee a day was associated with a 40% lower risk of heart attack, diabetes or stroke (they lumped these together as cardiovascular disease, and adjusted the numbers to account for other risk factors). So what does the research say to me?

Q&A With Dr. T

Question:

I've been on Ambien nightly for probably 10 years. I recently stopped it and had a VERY bad time sleeping. I haven't slept at night in a week and a half, and only begin to sleep when the sun starts to come up. I've been that way for years if not on medication. I have fibromyalgia and so I think I need much better sleep. What do you think about long-term use of Ambien? — Denise

Answer:

Rebound insomnia is routine if somebody stops Ambien after long-term use. Because of this, I suggest not stopping it suddenly. Instead you should wean yourself off it by reducing your dose by 1/8 to 1/4 a tablet daily, adjusting every two months or so.
