To borrow from Charles Dickens' famous opening line of his novel A Tale of Two Cities, last year was "the best of times and the worst of times ..."
But as bad as things were, last year brought numerous new reasons for hope. For instance, though COVID was challenging, it also resulted in a dramatic rise in research investment that stands to benefit those with CFS and fibromyalgia. Before COVID, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested a paltry $12 million per year in fibromyalgia research. But then persistent post-COVID symptoms began to emerge — the so-called "Long-Hauler Syndrome" that so closely mirrors the symptoms of CFS and fibromyalgia. And the NIH has decided to study this. In fact, it is committing $1.15 billion in research funding for this over the next four years, which is a 100-fold increase in research investment for an illness that is essentially CFS and fibromyalgia. So we finally are getting the attention we deserve!
Meanwhile, we're continuing to find and develop new resources to improve the lives of those dealing with persistent fatigue. To begin with, I've completed three studies of two effective new tools that can help you now, and will launch a fourth study soon.
STUDY 1: Recovery Factors® (Initial)
A unique serum peptide extract contained in a new supplement we developed called "Recovery Factors®" has shown to be a lifesaver for many people. In our first study (download PDF) of this, 60% of participants reported improvement with an average 69% increase in energy.
STUDY 2: Recovery Factors® (Expanded Participants)
Our second study of 100 participants, which has been submitted for publication, showed similar benefits as the first. It also confirmed that the same improvements were seen in those whose symptoms were postviral.
STUDY 3: HRG80™ Red Ginseng
We just completed a study of 188 participants using a unique form of Red Ginseng called HRG80™. I'm currently documenting the results of this study for publication. 60.1% of participants rated themselves as improved, with an average 58% improvement in energy, overall well-being, and cognitive function. Interestingly, those using the HRG80™ Red Ginseng chewables found they did best by taking only one chewable tablet daily. This is what I take myself if I have a busy workday. Excellent for stamina as well!
STUDY 4: Smart Energy System™ (Coming Soon)
I will soon be launching my fourth and final study in this series, this one on a new formulation that combines ribose, Ashwagandha, Schisandra, Rhodiola, green tea extract, and licorice — a combination currently available as the Smart Energy System™. People taking this are already reporting dramatic improvements in energy.
I should note that in each of the above studies, and the early experiences with the Smart Energy System, improvement was seen with just the first bottle (or bottle pair for the Smart Energy System).
In a recent blog post, I discussed the medication low-dose Abilify as a potentially new treatment for CFS. We've begun to get feedback from those we treat who've tried it, and from a Facebook group of about 1,800 people who've also tried it. Here's what they are saying:
- Most people do better with lower dosing (one drop to 1/4 mg each morning) than with higher dosing. Although some people do choose to raise the dose to 2 mg a day, or higher.
- Benefits are most often seen at about 2 to 3 weeks of use.
- Some find the benefits wear off, but for others it persists.
