Encouraging News About Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women
Women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for 11 years lived longer and healthier lives than women not taking HRT — with 50% less heart disease, and no increase in the risk of breast cancer, stroke or blood clots, reported a team of Danish researchers in the October 9 issue of the British Medical Journal.
These are very different results from the widely-reported Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Study, which showed an increase in the risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer among women who took HRT. Why the difference?
Firstly, the women in the new study started taking HRT around menopause. The women in WHI study started in when they were much older.
Secondly — and I suspect even more importantly — the women in the new study received bioidentical estradiol. The women in the WHI study received toxic conjugated estrogens, such as Premarin.
And I would guess that had the women in the new study also received bioidentical progesterone and estriol for 11 years, their health would have been ever better!
This is a welcome, encouraging study for women on bioidentical HRT.
