Both Swimnastics and Walking Reduce Knee Pain and Increase Knee Function in Those with Knee Arthritis

Published: September 7, 2012

In some sufferers, knee and/or hip arthritis is so severe that it hurts to walk—even though walking would help decrease the pain in the long term. This study showed that walking in a pool (and many communities with a local pool, fitness club or YWCA that offers low cost swimnastic programs) was even more effective at reducing pain than regular walking. So this offers a way to get well even if you are in too much pain to walk.

A new British study suggests that mothers who cradle their baby on their right side may be struggling with extreme stress. Previous research has shown that the majority of mothers prefer to cradle their baby on their left side, even if they aren't left-handed. Durham University researchers asked 79 new mothers to pick up their babies and cradle them in their arm. They also completed a survey on their mental state. The findings demonstrated that 86 percent of mothers who exhibited no signs of stress or depression in the survey preferred to hold their babies to the left, while 32 percent of mothers showing signs of elevated stress held their babies on their right arm.

Soy Slashes Sperm Count

Men who eat just half a serving of soya foods (e.g. miso, tofu and tempeh) a day may have drastically fewer sperm than those who do not consume such foods. Harvard researchers asked 100 couples seeking therapy for infertility about their intake of 15 soy-based foods over the preceding three months. An analysis of the data revealed that those men who consumed soy daily had sperm counts averaging 65 million sperm per milliliter, 40% less than the normal sperm count of 80 to 120 million sperm per mL. Men with counts lower than 20 million sperm per mL are generally considered infertile.

Sinus Infection? Antibiotics Are No Help

Published: September 7, 2012

One of the most common complications of the common cold or flu is a sinus infection. In fact, millions of Americans each year suffer from acute or chronic sinusitis, and 90% of these are given antibiotics. As the study below notes, this helps minimally if at all in the short term, and clinical experience shows that the antibiotics make the sinusitis much worse in the long term. This is because most chronic sinusitis is caused by an underlying fungal infection, and the BACTERIAL INFECTION IS SECONDARY.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) - An Easily Addressable Cause of Spastic Colon and Bowel Symptoms in CFS and Fibromyalgia

Published: September 7, 2012

e 1-10 trillion bacteria that live in our colon serve a vital function and are considered by some to be the largest organ in the body by weight. The healthy bacteria (e.g. acidophilus) are critical for normal functioning in the bowel and for preventing the overgrowth of unhealthy yeast, parasites, or dangerous bacteria. The bacteria are supposed to be in the colon (large intestine). When they overgrow in the small intestine, it is called "Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)"—which can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. SIBO may also contribute to food allergies and nutritional deficiencies. SIBO is very common in CFS and Fibromyalgia, easy to test for, and responds well to proper therapy.

Antibacterial Chemical Disrupts Hormone Activities, Study Finds

Published: August 29, 2012

A new UC Davis study shows that a common antibacterial chemical added to bath soaps can alter hormonal activity in rats and in human cells in the laboratory. The findings come as an increasing number of studies -- of both lab animals and humans -- are revealing that some synthetic chemicals in household products can cause health problems by interfering with normal hormone action. Called endocrine disruptors, or endocrine disrupting substances (EDS), such chemicals have been linked in animal studies to a variety of problems, including cancer, reproductive failure and developmental anomalies. This is the first endocrine study to investigate the hormone effects of the antibacterial compound triclocarban (also known as TCC or 3,4,4-trichlorocarbanilide), which is widely used in household and personal care products including bar soaps, body washes, cleansing lotions, wipes and detergents. Triclocarban-containing products have been marketed broadly in the United States and Europe for more than 45 years; an estimated 1 million pounds of triclocarban are imported annually for the U.S. market.

Is It OK to Take Pain Medications, Or Is it a Moral Weakness?

Question: I just feel so badly and I feel there is no reason to continue to live. I am 71 yrs. old, have been disabled since birth, doctors predicted I would not live beyond 20 years old. I surely fooled him. I always accepted my disability, even worked for 11 1/2 years. In 1983 I had pulmonary arrest and ended up with a tracheotomy and on a respirator 24/7, and I'm still on the respirator 24/7.
