Surprisingly, men may be more willing than women to sacrifice achievement goals for a romantic relationship, according to a new study from Duke Medical Center and the University of Albany. Their findings challenge our preconceptions that women are more likely to prioritize people and relationships while men are more focused on themselves and their achievements.

Water Exercises and Arthritis

In some sufferers, knee and/or hip arthritis is so severe that it hurts to walk - even though walking would help decrease the pain in the long term. This study showed that walking in a pool (and many communities with a local pool, fitness club or YWCA offer low cost swimnastic programs) was even more effective at reducing pain than regular walking, so this offers a way to get well even if you are in too much pain to walk.

Relaxation Training Highly Effective for Addressing Anxiety

This review of 27 studies suggests that relaxation training is an excellent alternative to valium - and will put you back in control! In recent years, there is increasing awareness that anxiety disorders are very common in the general adult population. Approximately 10% of the population suffers with anxiety disorder, and the drug companies are quick to pounce on their fears with a host of addictive tranquilizers. Sometimes these medications are needed. I recommend, however, that even in people already taking these medications, natural remedies for anxiety be added.

In this new study, 24 healthy women (aged 18 to 65) were randomly assigned to two groups. One group drank a high-flavanol Cocoapro® cocoa beverage (329 mg) once a day, while the other group consumed a matched cocoa beverage low in flavanols (27 mg). At three different periods during the 12-week study, various tests were conducted to evaluate skin properties: sensitivity to UV irradiation, skin blood flow, skin structure and texture, and skin hydration. The women who regularly consumed the high-flavanol cocoa beverage showed significant improvements in these indicators of skin quality, while those who consumed the flavanol-poor cocoa did not have an improvement in any of the measures.

Alzheimer's and Senility Are Reversible

Published: July 9, 2012

Let's look at a simple medical approach to evaluating and helping people with mild to severe loss of mental function. When doing this, you may find that the person never had Alzheimer's, and that even if they do, even modest improvements in mental function can dramatically improve the ability to function and remember names and people. We will also discuss a promising new medication for Alzheimer's that can stop it in its tracks (well, really an old natural compound that they will try to pass off as new).

Even as a medical resident in training over 30 years ago, it was obvious that elderly patients who were mentally OK before being hospitalized often developed dementia and confusion during their stay. In follow up, this did not always clear up after the hospitalization.

Vitamin B12 and Brain Health

Published: July 9, 2012

Earlier research has shown that patients with Alzheimer's have much lower B12 levels than healthy people. Vitamin B12 level in brain tissue (spinal fluid) is also very low in those with chronic fatigue syndrome -despite normal blood levels! In this study, it was found that people with lower B12 levels, despite the vitamin B12 levels still being well within the normal range, had decreased function in the "white matter" of the brain. It is suspected that this was caused by problems with myelin, which is the protective coating around nerves that also helps transmit nerve signals. This coating is also damaged in people with multiple sclerosis.
